Refinyx and Alfa Laval Announce Global Collaboration on Crystallization Systems for Critical Materials.
Evaporate seawater and salt crystals form, purer than the water they came from, because a crystal only admits atoms that fit. This is crystallization, one of the oldest and best understood ways to separate one salt from a solution holding several. Most critical materials refining comes down to exactly that separation. However, crystallization is least used where it naturally belongs: in the middle of the flowsheet as the main purification step vs just at the end to recover / purify end-products.
Refinyx and Alfa Laval will work together to change that. We will deliver crystallization systems that do both jobs: separation and purification, and final product recovery.
Refinyx brings the process: flowsheet, design criteria, pilot verification at Loophouse in Västerås, Sweden and the process performance guarantee. Alfa Laval brings the evaporation, crystallization, separation and heat transfer equipment, and 140 years of delivering it at commercial scale in around 100 countries.
The applications are wide: battery materials production and recycling, mineral refining and critical element recovery, with products such as nickel and cobalt sulfates and lithium salts.
This is how Refinyx works. We do not sell licenses. We deliver a solution, and that means assembling the right equipment for each customer's feedstock and site. Partners with Alfa Laval's record are how a Swedish process reaches a plant on any continent.
